Guidelines

  1. Honor System ( no one will "officially" monitor your crossing or enforce guidelines. It's your responsibility to persuade us, that you did what you claim you did. For example what would Ben and Denise Jones, Al Arnold, Jay Birmingham, Rich Benyo, Marshall Ulrich, Danny Westergard, Lisa Smith-Batchen, Lisa Bliss say? Would they have any questions at all, any doubts at all? )

  2. Start 6am-11am, start & finish in July/August, a continuous crossing thru the heat of the day in Death Valley ( see the Guideline Details tab for explanations and evening start)

  3. One continuous uninterrupted effort (eg you cannot do part now and part next year, or go somewhere, relax, recover and come back)

  4. Start at Badwater("lowest") going westward in sequence to Whitney Summit "highest" ( cannot do random sections back & forth)

  5. Crew is allowed => Solo Self Supported aka Oasis to Oasis who has no crew but can resupply by themselves. => For Solo Self Contained see Marshall's rules. SSC can leave "stuff" ( but not pick up anything) either in Lone Pine or Whitney Portal.

  6. Using your own feet by walking and/or running only ( no wheels, skates, wind sails, being pulled or pushed by any/thing/body )

  7. Runners are allowed to leave the course ( if it is still one continuous effort and they return to that exact spot sacrificing all time spent off the course )

  8. The attempt should be a personal challenge ( this depends on the age, physical ability, your health status, weather aso.)

  9. Announce way in advance on the Badwater146@GoogleGroups.com, and the Badwater146Admins@googlegroups.com. Before you start, post your own live Satellite Tracker link on Facebook & Google. Document, send proof of start & Whitney Portal & Whitney Summit time ( eg post your intention + your own GPS track from 1 or multiple sources like a watch / SPOT / inReach, pictures, time lapse video, crew report or emails, signature cards, witnesses from the mountain that saw you at specific times and locations, and strict documentation from the Portal to the Whitney Summit)

  10. Be a role model. Comply with any and all laws ( for the road, safety, night visibility, DVN Park, US Forest Service, police, mountain, Whitney aso). The admins will not police this guideline or any permitting process but you must obtain all necessary permits with DVNP, Mt Whitney aso

  11. Proven athletic track record or strict monitoring. ( see Guideline Details Tab for details, explanation and examples)

  12. You (and anybody for you) agree to never sue or try to sue anybody involved with Badwater146 for any reason (we are not organizing, giving official advice, are not to be held responsible for anything that is published or posted on FB, GoogleGroups or website ... so never ever ... for any reason...by anybody)

  13. The Badwater Admins will also keep track of any "fastest known time" aka FKT aka "records" for any Badwater ( eg circumnavigation, east to west, north to south ) and/or Lowest to Highest ( eg BW146, BW143 , BW Winter) type of crossing that already exists. And in the future we might consider keeping track of other new types of FKT/records related to Badwater and Lowest to Highest crossings
